We use a heavy-gauge PE film. In practice it means the cover stays put while plates slide across it, and it does not tear at the corners when you pull it tight.
Both, depending on the event. The film is waterproof, so a quick wipe brings it back for a second sitting. For messy parties most hosts simply roll it up and discard it.
